It is not often that you come across, let alone try to understand, one who was ultimately determined to be, an eccentric, and beautifully sensitive and talented individual like Philip Durham Lorimer. His story well warrants telling and hearing of the truly famous Australian.
Philip was a quiet and gentle boy who was always reputedly a great story teller. He was very popular at school, able to tell many a great yarn. With a fear of his fathers expectations Philip was to embark on a life journey filled with balanced personal struggle together with contentment.
Whilst searching and orientating to get around Sydney town, Philip was to meet, in his neighbourhood, a young lady who was to become the love of his life, and the real influence on his ultimate destiny. This romance turned him to exploration of his new country with all the hardship it presents.
Across Australia to the Gulf Country he dove sheep and cattle looking for a new world, enduring many challenges, experiencing endless beauty, beginning his poetic works in his manuscript book. This was an exciting journey as you will see.
Philip finally returned to Sydney from his 8 year, what would have seemed an eternity. A journey that was to be the catalyst for his future when on returned realising that, what was was no more. His world took a totally new path and struggle.
Sadly though, Philips first taste of prison was soon afterwards. With many more to come. Philip became the artistic bohemian he became extremely well known for. Very lonely, but known by thousands through his stories and verse.
Philip was never happier than tramping all over the country. These years were the catylist for many poetic works whether sleeping under the stars or living in his hidden cave amidst all the beauty of nature.
His final journey was a sad one being totally misunderstood and not deservedly respected. Society saw him as an outcast, as did his family. This will disappoint you and make you a touch angry I’m sure.
Lorimer was the true type of bohemian living a gypsy life and despising all conventionality.
‘He would never sleep beneath a roof or on a bed. Heavens blue canopy was his roof and Mother Earth his bed.’ Many fine tributes followed.
See Philip's life events in chronological order. A truly eventful but relatively short life he had.
